With that version of Mac OS X, and all versions since, it's been possible to use the Terminal command createinstallmedia to create a bootable installer of the macOS, in this article we'll show you. Though you can install Mavericks (OS X 10.9) directly from your Mac's hard drive, a bootable installer drive can be more convenient for installing the OS onto multiple Macs. And if your Mac is.
The first archive is the.pkg file itself. Those files are in XAR format, which was invented by the OpenDarwin community. You can either extract it with pkgutil -expand foo.pkg foofiles (the last argument is the destination directory, can be anything, will be created by pkgutil) if you have access to that command (it’s available in Recovery OS), or you can try the xar utility as xar -xf foo. This guide will walk you through creating a bootable flash drive installer for macOS Mojave which is started by first formatting the a USB flash drive and transferring the Mojave Installer over and then creating the boot partition necessary to run the Mojave Installer on a hackintosh on a non-Mac PC. Prerequisites: Downloaded Mojave and verify it’s in the /Applications folder 8GB+ Flash. Launch the App Store app, then look for macOS Sierra in the store. ( Here’s a link.) Click on the Download button, and your Mac will download the installer to your Applications folder.
These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and others who are familiar with the command line. You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful when you want to install on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time.
What you need to create a bootable installer
- A USB flash drive or other secondary volume, formatted as Mac OS Extended, with at least 12GB of available storage
- A downloaded installer for macOS Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, or El Capitan
Download macOS
- Download: macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, or macOS High Sierra
These download to your Applications folder as an app named Install macOS [version name]. If the installer opens after downloading, quit it without continuing installation. To get the correct installer, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. Enterprise administrators, please download from Apple, not a locally hosted software-update server. - Download: OS X El Capitan
This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.
Use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal
- Connect the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer.
- Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
- Type or paste one of the following commands in Terminal. These assume that the installer is in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive or other volume you're using. If it has a different name, replace
MyVolume
in these commands with the name of your volume.

* If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the
--applicationpath
argument and installer path, similar to the way this is done in the command for El Capitan. After typing the command:
- Press Return to enter the command.
- When prompted, type your administrator password and press Return again. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type your password.
- When prompted, type Y to confirm that you want to erase the volume, then press Return. Terminal shows the progress as the bootable installer is created.
- When Terminal says that it's done, the volume will have the same name as the installer you downloaded, such as Install macOS Catalina. You can now quit Terminal and eject the volume.
Use the bootable installer
After creating the bootable installer, follow these steps to use it:
- Plug the bootable installer into a Mac that is connected to the internet and compatible with the version of macOS you're installing.
- Press and hold the Option (Alt) ⌥ key immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac.
- Release the Option key when you see a dark screen showing your bootable volumes.
If you can't start up from the bootable installer, make sure that the External Boot setting in Startup Security Utility is set to allow booting from external media. - Choose your language, if prompted.
- Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple have posted a set of download links for installers for older versions of macOS on their website here:
There’s a teeny-tiny problem with the macOS Sierra installer though: running the
createinstallmedia
command as suggested ends up with an infinite loop of createinstallmedia
spawning new copies of itself, until the computer’s resources are exhausted (a fork bomb)!createinstallmedia
is hard-coded to install a specific version of the operating system package, which is the version it was originally bundled with. So it looks at the CFBundleShortVersionString
field of the Contents/Info.plist
file in the applicationpath you provided to make sure it matches the version it is expecting. If it doesn’t match, it assumes that you’re running the wrong copy of
createinstallmedia
, and the createinstallmedia
from the applicationpath should be run instead, so it launches that. But since there is a version mismatch in the Sierra installer that Apple is currently offering (as of 2020-02-11, the last-modified date of the installer is 2019-10-24) the version of the bundled
createinstallmedia
doesn’t match the installer’s version, and this triggers an infinite loop! You can fix this by editing the
CFBundleShortVersionString
field of the Install macOS Sierra/Contents/Info.plist
file to match what createinstallmedia
is expecting. For the version currently offered by Apple, that is:The workaround involved removing the tethering app’s interface and then taking the direct feed from the camera through an intermediary such as OBS.ALSO READ:In the new process, however, users can simply download the Lumix Webcam Software and install it to the PC. The company earlier this year had introduced a workaround to do so. https://bobbrown847.weebly.com/blog/lumix-tether-app-mac.

macOS 10.12 Sierra – Version is 12.6.06 and needs to be changed to 12.6.03
Obviously there was a mistake somewhere in Apple’s build process and they forgot to rebuild createinstallmedia to match their latest update. https://bobbrown847.weebly.com/blog/vr-viewer-app-mac.
